I was born the last month of 1901. Entered Bogart High School in September of 1907. My first teacher was Miss Maud Estella Jones. Miss Cate Huey was the principal. I liked school very much but I couldn't talk as much as I wanted to. One day I kept on talking until my teacher sent me to the principal to get a whipping. I went out of the room and stayed a little while, she came back and told Miss Jones she said she wouldn't whip me this time if I wouldn't talk any more. The next morning I told my mother I didn't feel well so she let me stay home. So that day Mr. Jones sent my mother a note telling what had happened. My mother gave me a real good whipping and sent me back to school next day, where the principal gave me another good whipping for telling a story. So from then on I have been truthful.

I finished the 8th grade March of 1919. My class mates were Kate Lawson, Elizabeth Milligan, Raymond Price, Robert Lenoir, and Blain Farmer. They have all passed away with the exception of Blain Farmer and myself.

Up until 1919 we only had six months of school. I was elected to teach the 1st and 2nd grades in the morning and piano in the afternoon. The money from the piano lessons went in a fund to pay the other teachers and me for two extra months giving 8 months of school. My salary for 1919 - 1920 was $40 per month. I went to East TN Normal Johnson City for my 4th year of high school, later to Carson Newman and U. T.

I taught at Bogart for 10 years. In 1929 I married Edward Warren Waller.
