My earliest memories are of walking to the Philadelphia
Grammar School. I walked with my brother Robert, and many
of the other neighborhood children. We came home for lunch most
of the days- sometimes on Friday we would eat hamburgers- 20 cents
a meal!
I walked down the railroad
to visit Granny Martin and Uncle Luke who enjoyed their swing
and chairs on the front porch. I always enjoyed her good cooking.
Uncle Luke always had a garden. He raised chickens and I gathered
the eggs. I always planted nasturtium to keep on their table in
the summertime.
My daddy worked in the boarding room at the mill, one summer
I carried his food to him. Mama was an inspector at the
mill, she always said she
could work and watch us out the mill window.
The post office was fun.
"Miss" Anne Blair always teased me about my letters.
Philadelphia was a good close knit community to have a good
childhood!
