A favorite day of mine was Girl Scout Day.
All the girls my age were in Girl Scouts and our leader was Vivian McCrary whom
we all called "Aunt Vivian." As soon as the bell rang
at school, we would dash to Thompson's
Store to
gaze at the assortment of candy. Hurriedly, we would choose between
the "hot balls" and "Kits" and don't forget
the soft drinks beneath the meat cooler in the back of the store.
We'd race back to the church, candy in hand, to see what novel
activity Aunt Vivian had for us that day. Aunt Vivian took us
on campouts and hikes in search of badges to sew on our sash.
She taught us knot tying, canteen drinking, cookie selling and
most of all a comraderie that I'll never forget.
