"Greetings From Bailey"

This lesson plan is to be used as an introduction to computer usage. The target group is Kindergarten students who have little or no  computer experience. This lesson would also be appropriate for 1-3 grade students.
This lesson will take approximately 3 days to complete if you are using a computer lab of at least 10 computers. The length of each lesson  will vary in accordance with the abilities of each student. Typically 30 minutes per lesson is advisable.

To complete this lesson you will need a Windows or Mac version of "Bailey's Book House". You will also need a computer and printer This lesson can also be adapted to utilize other multimedia software packages.This lesson plan correlates to the Tennessee Technology standards listed below. 4. The student will demonstrate proficiency in the care and use of computer based technology. Kindergarten Students in a computer lab will 1 Identify and effectively use input and output devices. 2 Demonstrate the proper sequence of turning on the equipment 3 Accurately use the keyboard and special keys on a microcomputer. 4 Choose the proper steps and order for the solution of a task. 5 Follow the ordered steps and give the correct output for a simple task. The student demonstrates the ability to 1 Manipulate input (keyboards, mouse) and output (printer and monitor) devices to create and print a greeting card. 2 Use developmentally appropriate software to follow sequential directions and proper steps to create and print their greeting card.
Procedure: Day #1 1 Explain to students that they are going to create a greeting card that they can print and take home. 2 Show them examples of greeting cards that you have made. 3 Explain that you will help each student by moving from one computer to the next. 4 Demonstrate how to start the computer. 5 Walk around the room and point to the place on the screen where they are to double click to start Bailey's Book House. 6 Point to the place on Bailey's main menu where they are single click to reach the greeting card menu. 7 Point to the different choices and ask them to try each one. 8 Now they are to choose the type of card they want to create. 9 Continue to monitor each student until they are ready to print their creation. 10 When they are ready to print point to the printer icon and ask each student to click one time. 11 Let the students retrieve their creation form the printer. 12 Be sure to complement them on a good job. Day #2 Repeat the steps from Day #1 adding these additional steps. 1 Encourage the students to make correct choices with less help. Watch for students that need additional help. 2 Monitor to see that students are using the keyboard and mouse properly. 3 Offer extra help to students that are having trouble. 4 Ask students that finish early to help someone that is having trouble. Day #3 By now most if nit all students will have mastered the lesson and will be able to create and print a greeting card with little or no help from you. Re-teach only those students needing help.
Assessment is accomplished by monitoring how each student uses the keyboard and mouse, how the student makes choices and by the quality of the finished greeting card.

Identify and effectively use input and output devices.  Student sits quietly in front of the computer with hand on the mouse  Students moves the mouse cursor around on the screen and can stop at appropriate program icons.  Students double clicks on the appropriate program icon to launch the program.
 Demonstrate the proper sequence of turning on the equipment  Student watches as you start a Macintosh computer  Student presses the start button on a Macintosh keyboard after you point to the correct key.  Student can properly start a Macintosh computer by pressing the appropriate key on the keyboard.
 Follow the ordered steps and give the correct output for a simple task.  The student will watch as you demonstrate the proper steps for creating and printing a greeting card using Bailey's Book House.  As the teacher points out the proper steps the student will model the proper steps for creating and printing a greeting card using Bailey's Book House.  The student will follow the proper steps to create and print a greeting card using Bailey's Book House.
